Winter Greenhouse, now in its 24th year of operation, is one of the largest retail Greenhouses & Nurseries in Northern Wisconsin.
Our primary aim is to provide the highest quality plants, unique products, and best service possible, while continuing to grow the long-standing relationship of trust and confidence that our customers have placed in us. We are constantly striving to keep up with modern improvements and to offer the newest products on the market.

The Greenhouse has collected a selection of hardy perennials that includes over 1000 varieties, the largest in the northern part of the state. There is also one of the widest assortments of annuals, roses, herbs, water plants, exotics, wildflowers, fruits, vines, evergreens, trees and shrubs.
Hanging baskets and planters of every description, shape, and form, filled with assorted annuals, perennials, grasses or shrubs are decorating the greenhouses throughout the season.

Many well-established display gardens encircle a pond and waterfall. You can follow numerous paths through the woods and gather inspiration for your own garden. We try planting only plants that are hardy for the area, allowing some experimenting to take place as well.

In addition to the plant materials, we carry a complete selection of soil amendments, mulches, and plant aids to prevent or eliminate problems with disease, insects, or critters. Our staff is trained and eager to provide assistance or answer your questions. Here on the website, in the section called Plant Guides you will find planting and growing brochures that can be printed out or are available at the greenhouse. These guides offer practical and helpful advice on a number of topics.

The Greenhouse started out in a modest way run by a small group of Danish, German and Canadian immigrants. They commuted daily during the spring season to the town of Ladysmith, 30 miles away, in order to sell bedding plants. Soon they discovered that there was a big demand for a local supplier of perennials hardy in our northern Wisconsin climate. They started collecting and propagating hardy perennials, as well as other interesting and unusual annuals. The plants were well received and the momentum of the business steadily continued to grow.

One by one, the greenhouses increased in number, until by the end of the 90's there were seven. The focus also turned to developing the display gardens that have now become a popular destination for many visitors, both from Wisconsin and out of state. The gardens surrounding the greenhouse include a pond and waterfall, a large woodland garden and annual beds. Large hanging baskets lined with sphagnum moss became a conversation piece, along with unusual and attractive pottery and related garden-ware, offering visitors more alternatives to create their own designs.

The Winter Greenhouse staff now includes many employees from Winter and the surrounding areas. We take a keen interest in the local community, keeping up active membership in the Winter and Hayward Chambers of Commerce, planting and maintaining a town flower bed, providing plants to the local school and community parks, and providing flowers and produce to the Winter Senior Citizen Center.

In 2007 we expanded our services as well, and now offer Landscape Design, Installation and Maintenance. For more details on this service, please refer to the Landscaping section of the website. You can also call or e-mail us to request a printed copy of our Landscaping Brochure.

The selling season begins with a Bare Root Sale on April 17, 18 and 19. There are also a number of special events throughout the season that feature seminars and workshops, sales, and refreshments. It is a good opportunity to get to know the staff and at the same time add to your gardening skills. Please check this website for regular updates, or sign up for our e-news.
