Happy 4th Of July

"Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed - else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die."

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Enjoy a healthy and happy holiday!  From all of us at the Winter Greenhouse.

Sluggo Plus

Plant Care Product:  Sluggo Plus

Sluggo Plus is a blend of iron phosphate, a natural soil element, and spinosad, which is derived from a naturally occurring soil dwelling bacteria, and bait additives compressed into easy-to-use pellets. “This is a natural and safe prevention if you have slugs in your Hostas/garden/vegetable garden”.

It kills earwigs, cutworms, sowbugs, pillbugs, crickets, slugs and snails. It can be used around vegetables, trees, berries, shrubs, and flowers and lasts up to 4 weeks. Evening is the best time to apply the bait as pests travel and feed mostly by night or early morning. Sluggo Plus works best when the soil is moist but with little or no standing water. Do not apply more than 3 times in any 30-day period. Sluggo Plus needs to be re-applied after heavy rain or watering. Do not apply within 3 days of harvest.

Scatter Sluggo Plus pellets on the soil around or near plants to be protected or around garden perimeters to reduce migration from moist and shady areas where pests take daytime refuge.
Apply bait at the rate of 1⁄2 to 1 teaspoon per square yard.  Always read and follow all label directions.

Paulette Ross Art

Art in the Garden Featured Artist

On August 4th the first annual "Art in the Garden" will take place. Two of the artist scheduled to exhibit are Paulette and Mike Ross.  Her colorful mosaic glass art pieces and Mike's lectric energy carving are displayed now in our gift shop special section for participating artists.  Here is more about Paulette and her husband Mike and their work.

Paulette and Mike Ross have been creating art together for quite awhile.  Paulette is a third generation glass artist.  She has expanded her family's focus in liturgical stained glass art to include approachable smaller creations for anyone to enjoy.  "I love the shimmer and sparkle of glass.  It's in my blood."  Mike joined in the family art, creating art glass windows, when Paulette brought him home in 1977.  Mike recently began to electrocute wood.  He uses electricity to create images on the wood.  "Lectric Energy Carving."  Paulette and Mike also like to up-cycle/repurpose materials.  This mosaic on display is from glass cutoffs from new art glass commissions and the steel is from disassembled antique art windows.
