The advantage of living in the 'northwoods' is the ability to enjoy each season in it's own right. By planning ahead and planting now, it is possible to provide interest in your garden and landscape from spring through winter.

There are many possibilities for providing fall color in your garden. You can choose from a variety of shrubs and trees with fall colored foliage. In addition, there are dozens of perennials that begin their show when temperatures begin to fall. An obvious choice is asters... but consider chelone, mums, joe pye weed, echinacea, and, of course, grasses. You can check our catalog to find even more fall-blooming plants.

Fall is a great time to plant, as the air temperatures are cooler, there is generally more moisture, and there are fewer bugs, making it more enjoyable for the gardener. The ground temperatures are generally cooler as well, making it easier on the plants to adjust.

In the 'Sustainable Landscapes' seminar, we discuss many of the basic principles in designing a landscape. To create a harmonious effect in a landscape design one must consider plant forms, textures and colors. In addition, harmonious landscape designs are environmentally-sensitive and include low-maintenance plants native to our area whenever appropriate. The end result is a sustainable design that is visually, functionally and aesthetically attractive. Join us for this free seminar. Registration is not necessary. The seminar schedule is subject to change, so check the website regularly for updates.

Autumn Splendor is also a good time to pick up bulbs for fall planting. It is an easy way to ensure a colorful spring. And if you just can't wait for spring, then try forcing some indoors during the winter.

Our mammoth mums are also ready to add some dramatic color to your fall decor. All you'll need is a scarecrow and a pumpkin or two to complete the display.
