Is there nothing new under the sun... or the moon? No way! 'Firefly' Petunia is very new and very unusual. It looks rather traditional by day, with true-green foliage and white trumpet-shaped blooms. But in darkness, it appears to emit a soft glow, like the glow of the moon or the "fire" of a firefly. While nature can be thanked for Firefly Petunia's unusual characteristic (bioluminescence), it is science and careful breeding (genetic modification) that has helped things along. This scientific wonder, developed by the U.S.-based Light Bio group, has been honored by Time Magazine as a Best Invention of the Year for 2024. We understand why. Neighbors may know that your garden grows beautifully, but soon they'll see that it also glows beautifully.
