Care:

This plant appreciates fertile soil, so start with a good growing medium and then continue to apply plant food monthly. Its growing medium should drain very well, and care should taken to avoid getting water on its leaves. Water once the soil dries out, soaking well but then allowing the excess water to drain very quickly. To propagate "baby" plants, take a runner with a leaf and, keeping the runner attached to the "mother" plant, cover a portion of both runner and leaf in the same soil in which the mother plant sits.

Description:

This popular creeping ground cover, Saxifraga stolonifera, Strawberry Begonia, is native to the rocky cliffs of China, Japan, and South Korea. Its runners will remind you of strawberry plants. It is an evergreen, mat-like "must-have" ground cover, just perfect for woodland gardens or shady areas. It can also be grown indoors or in containers, where its runners creep out over the sides. The spread averages about 8" tall and 24" wide, with green, rounded leaves. The leaves are uniquely hairy and have a red tint to them. In the summertime, flower stems rise over a foot above the foliage to display their white flowers. As an added perk, this plant is easy to propagate and gift to friends.
