Leptinella squalida, Platt's Black, Brass Buttons is native to New Zealand. This mat-forming perennial spreads indefinitely by rhizomes, creating the perfect ground cover. Foliage will take some foot traffic. It produces button-like flowers in early summer, followed by fruit. Neither flowers nor fruit should be expected to be showy. Instead, this one is prized for its foliage. With dark fernlike, oval foliage, it makes an attractive mat.
