Potentilla should be pruned back hard each year, by about 1/3 of its height. Do this pruning in late winter. This will help maintain the plant's best form and will promote healthy new growth. It likes moist but well-draining soils. It is not very fussy about soil type, as long as the drainage is good. It does best in good sunlight with brief respites in the shade.
